A Contemporary Coastal Retreat: Modified Scandi House, Aireys Inlet

We’re proud to share our latest progress update of this coastal Scandi House as it nears completion.

Set within the coastal bushland of Aireys Inlet, this modified Scandi House by Lifespaces Group is a quiet, contemporary retreat shaped by its environment.

The distinctive exterior is clad in Hurford’s Shou Sugi Ban charred timber, a finish that immediately anchors the home in its bush setting. Deep and richly textured, the dark facade creates an impactful yet understated presence among the coastal gums. Beyond its visual impact, charred timber offers exceptional durability, making it perfect for its location.

The rear facade is completed with full glazing to provide year-round comfort.

The home prioritises clarity of form, simplicity of detailing and a restrained material palette. Inside, this translates to light-filled spaces, warm natural finishes and a calm, clean atmosphere.

Timber surfaces, neutral tones and carefully crafted openings create interiors that feel both minimal and inviting. The contrast between the dark exterior and the warm interior enhances the sense of refuge, making stepping inside feel like entering a sanctuary.

Bespoke Modifications

Beyond the standard floor plan of the Scandi House, this home has been modified for the site’s sloping block. Rather than introducing level changes via stairs, a gently graded ramp is integrated within the central hallway, maintaining spatial continuity while ensuring universal accessibility throughout the home.

The design is further modified with the inclusion of an attached studio, creating a flexible secondary space connected yet distinct from the primary living zones.

Anchoring the main living area, the feature fireplace is set atop a custom Krause Brick hearth, establishing a tactile focal point that grounds the interior material palette.

Expansive glazing and high ceilings draw natural light deep into the home, creating bright and comfortable living spaces throughout the day.

The open-plan living areas flow seamlessly to sheltered outdoor zones, encouraging a lifestyle that moves easily between inside and out. Whether it’s morning coffee in filtered sunlight or evenings gathered around the dining table, the home is designed to support everyday rituals.

This contemporary coastal retreat is a space where design, materiality and environment work together to support a slower, more grounded way of living.
